Restore Our Fairgrounds
A coalition of Nashville’s environmental, neighborhood, and urban planning organizations is circulating a petition to amend Nashville’s Metro Charter.
Our petition — certified by the Metro Charter Revision Commission on June 22 — seeks to amend the Charter by updating the functions and duties of the Metro Fair Board.
Our proposed amendment removes “Auto Racing” as an activity required to be conducted at the Nashville Fairgrounds and replaces it with the term “Affordable housing and/or Workforce housing.”
Additionally, our proposed amendment requires the Fair Board to continue popular activities including fairs, expo center events, and flea markets.

Before it was paved over for NASCAR, the Nashville Fairgrounds speedway was a scenic community green space known as Cumberland Park.
Community Commitment
The petition and proposed amendment are an outgrowth of our coalition’s “Fairgrounds Community Commitment” to advance common-sense priorities, including:
Restoring the fairgrounds speedway site to its original use as community green space;
Cleaning up Brown’s Creek, a polluted waterway that runs adjacent to the speedway; and
Leveraging a portion of the speedway site to help address urgent community needs, such as affordable housing.
Our coalition’s work is informed by detailed public-opinion polling, which shows that few Nashvillians utilize the fairgrounds for auto racing — and that an overwhelming majority of Nashvillians (71%) prefer alternative uses of the speedway site.
